STATEMENT ON CURRENT EVENTS
The Coalition for Oral Health for the Aging supports the promotion of oral health for the U.S. aging population through improving access to oral health care both educational and clinical, and through appropriate and limited legislation, regulation, and policy development. The COHA Board believes a healthy dialogue and balanced discussion of proposed models of care as well as federal and state policy is critical.
The COHA Board has been made aware of a number of issues critical to the oral health care of the aging that providers are interested in discussing, but are concerned about the professional implications of raising concerns.
These topics include:
The COHA Board is very concerned about the impact of limiting open discussion and vetting of topics critical to healthcare professionals and their employment. Providers have expressed fear of speaking in opposition of the current public mantra on these topics. Providers have concern that they will be labeled as anti-aging or having a disregard for public health. Providers have concern for the impact of addressing these issues on their job security.
Given the current climate, the COHA Board agrees that healthcare providers should have professional concerns about addressing these topics as it could jeopardize their employment. The COHA Board is deeply disturbed by the silencing of professional discussion of critical issues of our day.
